Celebrating 47 Years in Business

BABB Security Systems is proud and delighted to be celebrating 47 years in business as a local, family-owned and operated company. Lorne Babb first opened his doors at 436 Water Street back in 1976. A few years later he was joined by his youngest brother, Darrell. The business quickly expanded to include our base: a 5,000-square-foot office and warehouse located at 6 Vanguard Court in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

 

Lorne has fond memories of starting the business with his wife Arlene and having his family join him. “I guess it was my parents who motivated me to open my own business in the first place. My father was a hard worker, dedicated to our family and very independent. Even though he passed away when I was still a teenager, he was the one who instilled those same values in me. Of course, my mother was an inspiration as well. She was an honest woman who always treated others with great respect.

 

“Today, I can truly say BABB Security Systems is a family business. Having my brother, Darrell and my son Gene work here has been a great asset to the company. They’re both dedicated, dependable professionals and their workmanship is a reflection of that. Gene’s wife, Beverley has been with us for almost 20 years now. She’s a pleasure to work with and a valued employee, as are Darrell’s two sons, David and Matthew.

 

“Of course, I think one of the main reasons for our success is our employees; we are a team of 20 now. They are all good people, skilled, experienced and trustworthy. Each and everyone has helped to contribute to the company’s strong reputation. And this summer my granddaughter Hailey helped out in the office – the third generation of the Babb family to work here. It was a fun summer, to say the least.”

 

When asked about the changes he has seen in his business Lorne said, “Technology, without a doubt. We started out mainly doing locksmithing and safe work, but over the years the company has evolved. When Gene joined the company he showed a keen interest in electronics and helped steer the company in that direction. He has always followed the latest trends in the security industry and today we provide quite a diverse range of products and services. Access Control, alarms, surveillance camera systems, door automation, hotel locking system, security grilles, intercoms, ATM installations, safes and vaults and of course locksmithing – we do it all,“ says Lorne. “Of course, we have kept our roots - our key shop on Water Street is still in operation – it’s been a landmark for the past 47 years and we won an award from the St. John’s Heritage Advisory Committee when we refurbished the outside of the building in 2009.”

 

Lorne believes that another main key to the company’s success is our customer satisfaction. “Our customers are our number one priority. Our mission statement is to provide each and every client with the best security solutions, using high-quality products. We want them to have access to the latest technology and security products and access to service 24/7. Our goal is to make sure the customer is happy.”

 

In closing, Babb says, “I am so grateful to my family and our employees. I am thankful to all of our loyal customers across Newfoundland & Labrador – they are the lifeline of the business. The company’s stability and growth over the years are a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and to the trust and confidence our valued customers place in us.
